Is there anyone out there more addicted than me?

topic posted Fri, April 22, 2005 - 4:07 PM by  john
I have been a DVD addict since about 1997. Sometimes I look at my collection and wonder if anyone else out there is as hooked as I am. I posted a picture of my collection to the tribe titled John's Addiction. Is anyone out there able to compete with my ailment? Please tell me I'm not the biggest loser out there. Maybe I should listen to my girlfriends and stop buying them, but you know I think it's just a ploy to get me to spend my money on them. Any comments?

  • I am currently 19 dvds off a 1000. I buy around 2-5 a week started collecting in 2001 and haven't stopped since. First i had a video collection to replace and then i discovered online shopping so never go out and always have something arriving in the post what more can i ask for. If i didn't have to leave the house to get something pierced or tattooed i'd never go out.

Hey dude I had a few hundred but had to sell them after my ex-girlfrined moved out and left me hanging with the rent.
I'm slowly building up my collection again and I promise myself I will never, ever sell them, unless the movie on the DVD itself sucks.
At one point I had to ask myself am I crazy because I love collecting and finding rare DVDs, collecter's Editions, Director's cuts, etc. But I figure as long as I find value in the movies themselves, I can justify collecting so many. If I had 100s of them but never watched them then I think it would be dumb of me to be collecting. I would just be a materialistic zombie hording things in my apartment. But that's not the case: every DVD I collect is a winner. and, it brings me joy to know that whenever I'm feeling down or depressed I can choose from a vast array of awesome films, pop one in the home theatre system, and my spirits will always be lifted.

I got a late start on DVDs...I bought heavily into laserdisks for much of the 90s, and still have several hundred (including lots of rare ones that aren't available on DVD). Once they stopped making LDs, I switched over to DVD, and purchased a few hundred (because I was still in full collecting mode).

The problem was that after I got laid off from my old career, where I was getting all my DVD spending money from, I changed to something that paid a lot less money. The good thing was that I turned that into a DVD buying position with a major indie retail chain. In the two years since then, I've been getting free ones from studios just about every day...sometimes a couple dozen in the same day. Now my problem has been in finding the time to watch all the ones that actually interest me...and with my being a movie junkie, there are a lot that really interest me. I only have @1500 at home now, but that's weeded down from at least 2500 that have come across my desk. Thank god one of my vendors gave me a DVD player for work.

I may be kind of biased, but I really think that maintaining a healthy DVD collection is a good thing. As long as you never have to worry about having something to watch.

I had to wean myself down after going back to school. I look for deals now at the stores or I rent at the video store.

Lack of space and funds has it limits. I have resorted to rent DVD tv series (and movies) and watching them on my days off. I tend to buy DVDs I'd watch over and over again at bargain prices. Tough though to limit my consumption when I love watching DVDs. TV selection sucks these days. Even then, I only watch the higher, educational channels or reruns.

Quite the collection I must say. I began a few years ago with collecting and creating DivX until DVD-R roms and discs got cheap. Up to date I'm at over 1300 DVD's (excluding my piece of crap DivX collection). I get new one added to it rather often.
