Top DVDs for 2007

My Top 10:
1. Eastern Promises - This movie is just awesome. Along with No Country for Old Men, it raised the bar for my yearly favorites. Great story with unexpected plot twists and memorable characters...It sets a new standard for staging a screen fight. If you haven't seen this one, you owe it to yourself to do so.
2. Children of Men - This could be one of my favorite sci-fi films of all time, but I'll have to give it a couple more viewings before I'll commit to that. For now, it's definitely one of my highest recommendations...Even without the visionary production design (of a realistically bleak future) and sweeping camera-work, the script and cast set it above most mainstream fare.
3. Breathless: Criterion - Finally, the deluxe edition of one of the greatest films of all time is back in print, and better than before. I had been searching for the out of print Criterion version of this since starting my laserdisc collection. It looks better than before and has TONS of great extras...a must buy for any cinephile!
4. Black Sheep - This is my favorite new horror film from a year of GREAT genre releases. It's not the scariest film you'll ever see, but it's definitely one of the more original. This is one splatter comedy that never disappoints.
5. Evil (To Kako) - Another entry from the horror scene; it's set apart by some innovative editing, camera-work reminiscent of early Raimi, and some of the best kills since Bad Taste...It's the first Greek zombie film, and probably the best splatter comedy that you haven't seen. Due to some unfortunate cover art, this one never found the right audience, but I'm always talking it up to try to change that.
6. Battlestar Galactica: The Razor - Sure, it's just an extended episode of a Sci-Fi Channel show, but it definitely belongs on my list. Great action, some cool battles, and even the return of old-style Cylons! I don't know how good it is if you are not a fan of the show, but if you're into either the old or the new version, you'll love this.
7. Hatchet - Our regular customers know all about this one. Fun splatter comedy/classic slasher flick with a cool new monster, lots of in-jokes, plenty of gore, and some fan-favorites making cameos, including Newbury Comics's own Toothface...As far as I know, these guys even invented the gas-powered belt-sander.
8. Behind The Mask: Rise of Leslie Vernon - Speaking of in-jokes, this horror mockumentary is a great exploration of what makes horror films work...A bit light on the gore, but plenty of referential stuff for the real horror fans. Even without the gimmick of being a documentary about the country's newest supernatural slasher, this would've been on my top horror list.
9. Planet Terror - The better half of the Grindhouse double feature was definitely this zombiesque bloodbath from Robert Rodriguez. It's got completely over the top performances, action and gore, not to mention a cast that will be familiar to any gorehound. If you haven't seen it, make sure you don't fast forward through the Machete trailer!!
10. Idiocracy - Mike Judge's vision of the future seems eerily plausible...From the opening description of how present day society might transform into the future depicted in the film, you can tell that this is going to be a brutally funny film. Aside from some faltering jokes towards the end, it really doesn't disappoint. After Evil (To Kako), this is the best film you didn't see this year.

online dvd database

Hey there,

I've been using phpDVD to keep track of my DVD's for a while, but I was wondering if anyone else had any experience with other database tools? I've modified the code to include information I am more interested in (ie. I removed the studio field, and added things like actors, directors, genre, etc). Currently, one has to put all the information in by hand, but I would like to automate that a bit, so if you have any pointers on code for determining a movie name based on reading the DVD, I would be intereted.

Is there anyone out there more addicted than me?

I have been a DVD addict since about 1997. Sometimes I look at my collection and wonder if anyone else out there is as hooked as I am. I posted a picture of my collection to the tribe titled John's Addiction. Is anyone out there able to compete with my ailment? Please tell me I'm not the biggest loser out there. Maybe I should listen to my girlfriends and stop buying them, but you know I think it's just a ploy to get me to spend my money on them. Any comments?

Best DVD commentary tracks

Anyone still around in this tribe that wants to compare the best talkfests - the ones that go beyond the usual jerk-off sessions where they praise all the technical people and yak about what order the film was shot in and whether it was raining that day?

I'll post my favorites in detail if this starts getting responses.

My all-time favorite is from Willie Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, where they tracked down ALL the children who appeared in the film. We get to hear them walking down memory lane and discuss who had a crush on whom. If you don't end that commentary with a glowing smile on your face, you're made of stone.

This is a definite one for the collection.

Anthony Hopkins plays an eccentric old coot that leaves New Zealand to see if he can beat the landspeed record with his motorcycle at the Salt lake Flats. He has a hilarious adventure en route to his destination. My favorite part was his time at "Hollyweird" and his time with Tina the Transvestite. Very cool.

This is a GUY'S "chick movie"... If a guy can watch it and NOT shed a tear, I would be amazed... Seriously!

It'll be availabe on DVD in a couple of weeks. Check out the trailer. I loved it. This movie will make a great Father's Day gift. Inspiring about a guy who really LIVES his life to the fullest.

James Dean

With this year being the 50th anniversary of James Dean's death, there'll be The Complete James Dean Collection coming down the pike on May 31. The interesting aspect of this release is that it will include "East of Eden," which has yet to get the DVD treatment and has been unavailable on VHS since 1995. "Rebel Without a Cause" and "Giant" (a film that gets increasingly hokey as it goes along) will also be included in the set. DVD special features include new documentaries, commentaries, deleted scenes, behind the scenes segments, screen tests and more, with a SRP of about $70.

Big news from Sony

Sony will be putting out an exhaustive three disc release of Bill Cosby's "Leonard Part 6" on April 6. It will feature audio commentary by Bill Cosby, remastered audio in Dolby Digital 5.1 and Dolby Surround 2.0, story boards, a featurette about the making of the film, 30 minutes of deleted scenes, a Joe Don Baker career retrospective, an interview with director Paul Weiland, an unreleased animated feature based on the movie and a behind the scenes look at the movie's special effects.

And if you guys believe this, you're a lot more gullible than I thought you were! The DVD will contain an anamorphic widescreen copy of the film, and not surprisingly, no supplemental features will be included on the disc. Schedule your vacation day for April 26 so you can be the first to buy this one. Let's start the countdown to "Leonard Part 6" right now...

Paramount has officially...

...gone to the "Star Trek" well one too many times for my taste, but that doesn't mean "Enterprise" won't get a good DVD treatment. As "Star Trek" comes to an end after 18 years on television, "Enterprise" will be the focus of a pretty impressive box set in May.

All 26 episodes of the first season will be presented in anamorphic widescreen with audio in Dolby Digital 5.1 and Dolby Surround 2.0. An audio commentary with creators Rick Berman and Brannon Braga will be included on the pilot Broken Bow. That episode as well as The Andorian Incident and Vox Sola will also contain text commentary with Michael Okuda and Denise Okuda. The featurettes "Creating Enterprise", "O Captain! My Captain! ...the PlayStation Portable in March, and in an interesting bit of news, the company has announced that it plans to release movies in a "mini-disc" format compatible for viewing on the game system. Titles are expected to be available within a month of the PSP's 3/24 launch date here in the States, and will include "XXX," "Hellboy," "Resident Evil 2" and "Once Upon a Time in Mexico." "Spider-Man 2" will actually be bundled with the first 1 million units of the PSP.

Dollar DVD Debacle

OK, I admit I'm kinda hooked on picking up crappy little films that I come across in the dollar or 99-Cent stores. Sometimes they're in cardboard sleeves, or sometimes in the slimline dvd plastic cases, but I tend to pick up obscure films or TV shows when one catches my eye. I don't expect pristine quality (sometimes there isn't even a menu), but for a buck I usually expect to get what I pay for.

EXCEPT...

Now some of the companies (like 'Genius Entertainment' - HA!)are altering the content on their dollar discs, specifically dubbing in different music over the opening credits to TV shows. I bought a collection of the Ronald Howard Sherlock Holmes that had some weird stock classical theme in place of the original music. Worse, I bought a Jack Benny collection that had his signature 'Love in Bloom' theme replaced with some terrible blaring trumpet piece.

I'm assuming that this is done to prevent some other company from using these to burn their own releases but it's really annoying. Given a choice I'd rather have a sporadic company logo in the bottom corner (like what 'Platinum' does) than have the music changed around. Buying them altered isn't even worth a dollar to me.

WASHINGTON — Some people like to watch the previews, others don’t.

Since the advent of the VCR, and with the arrival of DVD players, those who want to get to the movie have been free to skip past the coming attractions.

The entertainment industry, however, is exerting pressure in Congress with the hope of making it impossible to skip past previews and advertisements at the opening of DVDs.

Legislative language that would have done just that — make it illegal for DVDs to allow fast-forwarding — was struck at the last minute from a copyright bill that passed the Senate late Nov. 20.

The legislation, however, is headed for an uncertain fate in the House, which could reconvene Dec. 6 and 7 to consider, among other things, stalled intelligence reform legislation.

If the House passes the legislation as is, the matter could be rendered moot. But if it fails, Congress may be forced to revisit the issue of copyright reform next year in the 109th Congress, allowing the issue to re-emerge.

The entertainment industry asserts that revenue from the advertisements and publicity from the previews is central to its business plans, while opponents note that millions of VCR owners have been fast-forwarding past ads and coming attractions for nearly two decades.

The issue grew out of the proposed Family Movie Act, introduced this year by U.S. Rep. Lamar Smith, R-Texas. The bill would have exploited technology developed by ClearPlay, Inc., allowing families to skip past explicit sex and violence on DVDs.

The film industry, however, balked, arguing that the use of such technology would compromise filmmakers’ intended product.

Last week, the Senate Judiciary Committee began final consideration of legislation backed by the Motion Picture Association of America and other industry interests to clamp down on piracy of DVDs.

The legislation included a number of clauses opposed by a growing number of technological freedom groups in Washington.

Along with the clause that would have forbidden skipping ads and previews was language that would have lowered the bar for enforcement of copyright infringement law, removing the requirement of willful intent for prosecution.

Another clause would have allowed the Justice Department to take civil, in addition to criminal action, against individuals or companies that violate copyright law.

Art Brodsky, a spokesman for Public Knowledge, a Washington-based group that fights restrictions on information sharing, said the civil action clause would have made the Justice Department "the movie industry’s private law firm."

The MPAA did not respond to a request for comment.

A new high-definition DVD format aimed at replacing current DVDs got a huge boost Monday when NBC Universal and three other heavyweight Hollywood studios endorsed electronics giant Toshiba's new HD DVD.

The new discs - due out next fall - promise superior picture and audio quality and greater storage capacity, enabling longer movies to be stored on a single disc.

The commitment to release movies in HD DVD by Paramount, NBC Universal, Warner Bros. and New Line Cinema is a blow for Sony's competing Blu-ray DVD format.

Blu-ray has the commitment of many computer and consumer electronics manufacturers, including Dell, Hewlett-Packard and Samsung, but no studio beyond Sony's Columbia TriStar Group. Sony is in the process of acquiring MGM.

Walt Disney and 20th Century Fox haven't committed to either format.

For now, Toshiba's HD DVD gets "first-mover advantage," says independent analyst Richard Doherty of The Envisioneering Group. "The DVD player isn't worth much without movies to play on them."

Movies are the big ticket for DVD sales. Consumers spent $16.3 billion on pre-recorded DVDs in 2003 and $16.7 billion this year through October, trade magazine DVD Exclusive says.

Because of its higher resolution, the new DVD format is aimed at the early adopter crowd - those with snazzy plasma and high-definition TVs.

But don't throw away that DVD collection. Current DVDs play on both existing and new DVD models. It could take years - and lots of well-heeled consumers - for the new format to take off.

While plenty of new DVD players cost less than $100, Blu-ray models sell in Asia for $2,000 and up. Toshiba says its unit will retail for $995. The HD DVD movies will be priced "at a premium," too, says Jim Cardwell, president of Warner Home Video. "The video is better. The interactivity is better. The audio is better. That should be worth a little more."

Cardwell, along with counterparts at Universal and Paramount, say the deals with HD DVD are non-exclusive. The studios say they remain open to working with Sony.

But, concedes Universal Home Video President Craig Kornblau: "We'd like to see only one format."

Maureen Weber, spokeswoman for the Blu-ray Disc Association, wasn't waving a white flag Monday. "It takes more than just a disc to create a format." She says her team has the advantage because the Blu-ray format is supported by computer and consumer electronics manufacturers.

All teenage boys have some kind of "do not enter or else"
sticker or sign on their bedroom door.

Something very very bad always happens when someone says
"How bad can it be?" or "Can things get any worse?"

While crossing wobbly old rope bridges, the hero will always
state "don't look down." Then the female will say, "too late,"
prompting the wooden board she next steps on to break and
she falls through, and is left dangling high above a river
that's always full of hungry, man-eating crocodiles.

Any teen comedy usually ends with a prom no matter the time
of year.

If the hero is running, the henchmen's machine-guns will
always give off sparks behind the hero's feet and never
actually hit him.

Heroes/villains, especially when wearing bulky, heavy, long
black trench coats, can jump easily from rooftop to rooftop,
always able to clear alleys ten to fifteen feet wide.

If a parent goes to their child's bedroom and they are
already in bed asleep, the parent will approach the bed and
say something kind to the sleeping child before brushing
their hair into place and kissing them on the forehead.

If there happens to be a high-rise building in an action/
disaster film, you can always expect an oblivious Hispanic
janitor listening to salsa on his headphones.

Be extremely cautious around cremation urns, because somehow
it's going to get knocked over.

If there is a dangerous man breaking into a house, only the
mother and daughter will be home. The mother will then usher
the child into a closet and tell her to stay there, and the
closet will always have those blinds with little slits in
them that the child can look through. The bad man will
always approach the closet, but will never look inside
before leaving.

An alcoholic can always chug down a gallon of whisky without
vomiting, getting really drunk, or burning their throat.
He'll chug it down, wince, and go "Aahhh!"

If there is about to be a huge disaster like an alien
invasion or the world is about to be plunged into a new ice
age there will always be a smart character who can see
what's going to happen well before it does, but is ignored
and made fun of by everyone until its too late.

In a gunfight, the hero can hide behind any object even if
it is very thin and no bullets will pass through.

In a movie with a Chinese bad guy, the guy ALWAYS hangs out
in China Town and his hideout is ALWAYS in a Chinese
restaurant.

The hero may get shot in the arm at the very end.

If a number of people are knocked out with gas or otherwise,
they will all wake up at approximately the same time.

Format wars

Old news to a lot of you, but interesting nonetheless:

(CNN) -- The electronics and entertainment industries are shaping up for the biggest format battle since the "video wars" between VHS and Betamax to decide the future of DVD.

Two rival "next generation" DVD formats look set to be launched onto the marketplace next year.

Both are backed by powerful and well-known Japanese manufacturers, with each staking their claim to an industry worth billions of dollars.

And with the DVD market unlikely to support parallel formats, the loser faces the prospect of squandering millions spent on research, development and marketing costs.

Both "Blu-ray", principally backed by Sony, and "HD DVD", which has been developed by Toshiba, are based on the same basic technology.

Both replace the red lasers found in current DVD machines with blue lasers, utilizing their shorter wavelength to store data at the higher densities needed to record high-definition movies and television.

But with both parties determined to prove the superiority of their product, a protracted dispute could be damaging to the industry as a whole, increasing production costs for DVD manufacturers and making buyers nervous about investing in a format that could quickly become obsolete.

Buena Vista Home Entertainment president Bob Chaprek recently told the DVD Forum, an industry association of 220 electronics and media companies, that launching two formats simultaneously risked "potentially crippling the next generation format" and "utterly confusing or aggravating the customer."

With Blu-ray recorders already on sale in Japan, Toshiba looks set to enter the fray with HD DVD models early in 2005.

But the real battle looks set for next Christmas, when both major players plan to have DVD players in the shops.

By that point the entertainment industry, and particularly Hollywood, will likely have chosen sides; and history suggests that the format with the greater selection of movies will prevail.

Sony has been stung before by that scenario, having seen its groundbreaking Betamax format starved out of the video market by the wider selection of titles made available in VHS format.

This time, however, Sony seems to have learnt its lesson. Not only does it now have VHS pioneers Matsushita, better known for its Panasonic brand, on side but its success with the Playstation games console provides a template for a successful marketing campaign.

Despite its limited previous experience in the gaming industry, Sony was able to corner the market despite competition from Sega and Nintendo because of the depth and quality of its games range.

Sony is already maneuvering for the fight. In September it announced that it was adopting Blu-ray as the format for Playstation 3, currently scheduled for release in 2006.

And with Sony Pictures already in the Blu-ray camp, a Sony-led consortium also recently acquired MGM, along with their back catalogue.

Furthermore, Blu-ray has the backing of Hewlett Packard and Dell, which together control around 30 percent of the global PC market.

"In terms of technology, we have no weak points. Our format is superior on all counts," Sony executive officer Kiyoshi Nishitani said recently.

Toshiba however has not been cowered by Sony's efforts, retaliating to Sony's Playstation-Blu-ray collaboration by announcing that it would introduce notebook computers with HD DVD in the last quarter of 2005.

HD DVD is also backed by rival manufacturers Sanyo and NEC while last year it was also approved by the influential DVD Forum, which has said it will finally endorse just one format.

Toshiba also claims the support of Time Warner, in which it owns a small stake and with which it worked closely to establish the current DVD standard in the mid-1990s.

It has also had senior engineer Hisashi Yamada commuting between Japan and the U.S. in an effort to court the support of undecided studios such as Paramount, Disney and Universal.

"If Sony is so sure it is winning the battle, it wouldn't have felt the need to buy MGM," says Yamada.

Toshiba claims HD DVD's biggest advantage is the format's low transitional costs. Because the discs are physically the same as existing DVDs many of the existing components used by DVD manufacturers will still function.

But the monumental task faced by Toshiba and its allies was summed up by the gadgets weblog Gizmodo, which declared in a recent feature that "Blu-ray has already won."

"Blu-ray is not only technically superior to HD DVD, it has a far stronger corporate backing, and has demonstrated the ability to have more content available to push the format," said Gizmodo.

While a duel layer HD DVD can hold 30GB, a duel layer Blu-ray disc already has a 50GB capacity, and Sony claim the format could eventually hold as much as 200GB on an eight-layered disc.

Sony is also working hard to bring costs down, announcing earlier this year that it had developed paper Blu-ray discs.

"I don't think Toshiba will back down," says analyst Carlos Dimas. "Sony is unlikely to give up either. Inevitably there is going to be some confusion in the market and there's going to be another standard war.

"In the initial phase the consumer will probably lose. It is a big risk for people who actually buy products for either format without knowing who the winner is."

But, in case you've only recently made the switch from DVD to video and are already sweating over the cost of replacing all your favorite films, don't worry. Both Blu-ray and HD DVD will still play your old DVDs.
